The Q&A Archives: Managning Cucumber Plants

Question: My husband recently bought a couple of cucumber plants and he has planted them in the required soil in the morning sun. His question is: will these plants get leggy and need to be caged? Please advise.
Thank you,
Virginia Elliott

Answer: Cucumber plants are vining plants, and should be allowed to trail along the ground. If you nip off the vines, they won't produce cucumbers. If you're short on space, you can erect a trellis behind the plant and train the vines up the trellis. Caging won't work with cucumbers.
