My soil is sandy and even though I have put peat and also potting soil and lots of compost, my canna lillies do not come up in the spring, if they do they are very small leaves and do not bloom flowers.

Bettye,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

The plants may be needing something else. Certainly the organic matter you added is important but perhaps light is lacking or nutrients. I suggest providing a light dose of a complete fertilizer watered in well. Try to keep the soil moist so they have the best chance of growing. You may need to try some new varieties too.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
