Talk of infequent but deep watering of lawns - I currently have irrigation system which I use on the lawns every other day - would I be better using this every 3-4 days but longer to encourage deep roots?

The deeper the roots, the less of a slave you'll be to watering and the more drought resistant your lawn will be. I'd try watering every 4 days during the hottest part of the year, applying water for the same length of time as you're doing now. Your lawn should thrive on about one inch of water per week.

Best wishes with your lawn!
