what is the best and easiest way to repair bare spots in our lawn? we have seeded, fertilized, covered area with top soil and watered the spots but nothing has happened, is there something else we should be doing? Also, is there an easy way of removing the dead grass in those spots? Thanks for any and all help you may give us.

It may not be easy, but raking out the old dead grass, along with its roots, then smoothing over the soil and reseeding is the best approach to getting rid of the bare spots. If you leave the old, dead grass in place and reseed, the seeds cannot make good contact with the soil and they will die. Removing all the obstacles will give the seed a healthy place to send its roots.

Best wishes with your lawn.
