I just bought my house about 4 months back, once we moved in the grass was growing long and green. Then it all died off. My house is new construction in Mississippi (lot of clay and sand) so I think the seed that was layed was low grade. I have a full acre and was wanting some tips on reseeding. Also there is a large amount of weeds and was wondering how I should kill them off first. Lime?? I do have a tiller that has helped loosen up the soil. Thanks for you time.

Jon,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. The spring rush has brought a deluge of questions and we are working hard to catch up!

I suggest you start by having a soil test done. Your County Extension Office can help with this. When the results are in they will guide you on amounts of nutrients and lime to add and then rototill in. While waiting for that test spray the area to be seeded with glyphosate (Roundup is one brand) and give it a week to work before mowing the area closely. I will kill most of the weeds including perennial ones. Next look over these following web sites and select the type of turf you would like to have for a lawn:

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
