The Q&A Archives: Shade Tolerant Flowering Vines

Question: I was hoping that you could advise me. I would like to have some sort of flowers which would climb a 4 ft. high split rail fence. Where I plan to put the fence is partial to mostly shade. Could you recommend flowering plants or vines which would do well in this enviroment? I believe we're in Zone 5.

Answer: There are a number of vines that might work. Here is a list you might check against a catalog with pictures so you can see how they'll look!

Actinidia, Humulus lupulus (hops), Polygonum, Euonymus fortunei (wintercreeper euonymus), Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston ivy or Japanese creeper). There may be some varieties of climbing roses that are tolerant of shade.
