I have had a Japanesse Maple planted for 2 years. It made it through the 1st winter alright. Last year I notice some white mold on the trunk of the tree. This year no buds or leaves came out on the branches. I assume it is dead and needs to be up rooted. If this is not true let me know what I need to do to have a health tree back.

Thanks

Start first by checking the branches to see if they are alive. Use your thumbnail to scrape the bark. If there is green tissue, the branch is alive; if the tissue is brown, it's dead. Keep scraping the branches until you find green tissue and then prune the branches back to that spot. If you cannot find green tissue, the tree is dead and should be replaced. Hope the news is good!
