You might consider dwarf dogwood or hawthorn trees, or use a shrub that it tree-like in appearance. Thuja orientalis 'Filiformis Erecta' is a good choice, P.J.M. rhododendron, which is evergreen, or Camellia, another evergreen with the bonus of flowers. Each of these has an upright growth pattern.

Best wishes with your new plants!
