The Q&A Archives: Perennial Vines for Zone 6

Question: I am in USDA zone 6 (MA) and would like to cover a 5 foot high chain link fence with both annual and perennial climbing plants. I plan to plant morning glory and sweet pea vines as annuals. Do you have any suggstions for perennial vines that will: a.) not crowd out the annuals and b.) provide enough cover so that I don't have to clean up after the annuals are spent?

Answer: Tricky situation: you want a vine that isn't so vigorous it will swallow the annuals yet vigorous enough to fill in by the end of the season. Yes? Try Lonicera sempervirens (evergreen honeysuckle) and/or Polygonum aubertii (silver lace vine). Both are vigorous yet not stranglers the first season.
