What type of media would you use on a flower bed to keep weeds to a minimum? We are using mulch, but we are concerned about termites. What do you suggest?

You can use almost any organic matter as mulch material to help keep weed seeds from germinating. Many people use cedar bark chips, which are not especially attractive to termites because of the natural oils they contain. If you're concerned about using bark chips, try a thick layer of straw, grass clippings, pine needles, or even shredded paper. Whatever material you use, the mulch will be more effective if it is 4-6 inches thick.
