I have recently noticed mutated growth on the stems of a couple of Fantex Ash trees and also on an apple tree. The end of a branch becomes flattened and grows broad and fan shaped. Usually the flattened branch will also curl. What could be causing this strange growth?

What you've described sounds like 'fasciation'. It can be a genetic mutation, or it may be caused by a bacterial infection (Corynebacterium). The affected branches can be removed from the plant without problem. Many florists like to use theseabnormally flattened branches in their dried flower arrangements.
