If you are having trouble with mosquitoes, the best defense is to use an insect repellent on your clothing as recommended by the CDC. You should also eliminate any standing water where they might breed, including checking your house gutters, tarps covering wood piles, discarded toys, and old tires for example. Wading pools, bird baths and the like should be emptied regularly. If you have an ornamental pond, it should be stocked with fish to eat mosquitoe larvae or you can use the Bt dunks or "donuts" to prevent them. IF you use a rain barrel it should have screening on the top or a layer of vegetable oil on the surface. Your local county extension may also have suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the insects that are in your yard.
