The Q&A Archives: Lawn dead spots.

Question: I made a mistake and sprayed weed and grass killer on the weeds on my lawn. I now have many

Answer: Unfortunately, you will have to reseed the bare spots. Loosen the soil down about six inches, work in some compost, rake the surface smooth, seed, rake very lightly (do not fully cover the seed) and tamp lightly to assure good seed to soil contact. Spread a thin layer of straw over the surface to shade the soil and help keep it moist. (The straw will decompose eventually.)Keep moist until the seed germinates and the grass takes hold. Midsummer is the worst time of year to try to seed so you may have to try again in early September. Good luck!
