The Q&A Archives: Plants to deter gophers

Question: Are there any known plants that could be planted around the perimeter of a yard to deter gophers? It seems every week or so we have another intruder. We've used gopher bombs, and pellets as well as an electronic device. But nothing seems to work. Any help you can give would be much appreciated!!!

Answer: There is an old-fashioned annual plant that is sometimes called mole plant or gopher purge. The Latin name is Euphorbia lathyris. This plant exudes an irritating sap and was said to repel moles if simply planted at regular intervals around the garden.

I have found, though, that the only sure way of eliminating gophers is to trap them. Scissors traps, properly set, will eliminate the pesky critters.

Best wishes with your garden!
