Answer: That sounds really odd! Clematis likes the top in the sun and the roots shaded and they also appreciate moist but well draining soil. I wonder if the first shoot is killed back by a late frost every year? This would account for its trying to grow and bloom, then being set back. It's so vigorous that it doesn't skip a beat but sends up more flowering shoots. Wish I had a solution, but we can't control the weather!
