Why does the first vine die every year, and it sends up new ones and they are fine? They grow and bud then turn brown and die. then regrow and bloom. Thank you |
That sounds really odd! Clematis likes the top in the sun and the roots shaded and they also appreciate moist but well draining soil. I wonder if the first shoot is killed back by a late frost every year? This would account for its trying to grow and bloom, then being set back. It's so vigorous that it doesn't skip a beat but sends up more flowering shoots. Wish I had a solution, but we can't control the weather! Best wishes with your garden! |
