I got a piece of ivy and it is about 1 foot and a half long. How do I get it started with roots?

You should be able to root it as a tip cutting, possibly making several starts from the long piece that you have. Here are directions on how to do that. The technique to rooting is similar whether it is as a houseplant or as a landscape plant. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.
