Johnny's Select Seed (www.johnnyseeds.com) or, ph. 207-437-4301, offers celery seed. According to Johnny's, celery is a demanding crop. Celery must be kept well fertilized and watered throughout the season. Never let the soil dry out, indoors or out. You must assure fertile soil for large, mild heads and roots. The disease "Black Heart" can occur if adequate soil calcium (have a soil test performed prior to growing celery) and water cannot be assured. Bolting can also be a problem, this is caused by exposing young plants to temperatures below 55F for 10 days or more. Be very careful when hardening off seedlings for this reason. |
