The Q&A Archives: planting sunflower

Question: I have area in my garden where sunflower seed & it's hull fall down,Can I plant anything there ,including sunflower itself?

Can I plant sunflower with okra or tommato?

Answer: Sunflowers do have an allelopathic effect in some cases, including to itself. I would suggest harvesting the flowers or cleaning up the hulls regularly so they do not leach or decompose into the soil. The worst cases seem to be where a birdfeeder is located all winter with a heavy concentration of the hulls. You could experiment with planting tomato or okra and see what happens.
