Usually around a pool folks like to have tropical looking plants. Larger gaudy blooms and large foliage are great choices. Some plants that might help create this look include canna, yellow bells (Tecoma stans), hibiscus (both tropical and perennial types), bougainvillea, mandevilla, allemanda, red bird of paradise (Caesalpinia), plumbago and lantana. For shrubs to block a view consider, oleander (cold tender in some southern areas), southern wax myrtle, banana shrub (Michellia figo), Carolina cherry laurel (gets really large), and clumping types of bamboo. In a shady location Caladiums, ginger, impatiens and ferns are nice choices. For trees, select plants that don't tend to be messy, dropping stuff throughout the summer season.
