My girlfriend just told me that she heard Washington State banned Whiskey barrels. Apparently, there's concern that the soil could become contaminated. Have you heard anything through the grapevine about this?

Whiskey barrels are sometimes hard to locate (try HomeBase or Eagle Hardware), but they are available and make great planters or water gardens. The insides of the barrels are usually burned out before they're sold, so the only residue left is a bit of charcoal. I've used whiskey barrels for years and have never had a problem with plants or with fish. I think what you've heard is just a rumor.
