| If there is a lot of types of dracaena and at the store how do I tell what kind I am getting? It just says dracaena on the name tag. Are all dracaena slow growing? |
| Dracaena is a genus of about 40 species of sparsely brunched, evergreen shrubs and trees from forest, scrub, and dry, open slopes. They occur in the Canary Islands and throughout tropical Africa, W. Africa, with one species in W. America. Most Dracaenas are false Palms - the leafless woody trunk and crown of leaves giving a distinct Palm-like appearance, but in fact they are unrelated to the True Palms. Dracaenas are among the most common, ornamental, and durable house plants. Most require medium light intensity. In sunny locations Dracena needs protection from summer sun. The soil may be any good potting soil kept evenly moist. In summer use a dilute house plant fertilizer. Ideal temperatures are from 62 to 65 degrees at night and 80 to 85 degrees during the day. As plants age they drop lower leaves. All are relatively slow growing. Choose a dracaena according the the color or leaf shape you prefer and you won't go too far wrong.
