| ALOHA, I NEED SOME ADVICE, MY GUEST BATHROOM (FULLBATH) HAS NO WINDOWS OR VENTILATION. IT SMELLS SO MUGGY AND HOT ALL THE TIME. I WAS WONDERING WOULD I BE ABLE TO PUT A POT OF SOME KIND OF HERB OR A SMALL POT OF SOME NICE FRAGRANT PLANT OR SOMETHING IN THIS ROOM. | The National Aeronautics and Space Administration testedt some houseplants to see if they could clear carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from indoor air. Of the fifty indoor plants tested, the Boston fern was the most effective. Three types of palms ? areca, lady and bamboo ? received the highest overall ratings, which included ease of growth and maintenance, resistance to insects and amount of moisture released by the plant, along with ability to remove chemical vapors. My only reservation in recommending either bamboo or Boston ferns is without windows, there will be no natural light in the bathroom and all plants need light. You might try using cut flowers or potpourri or sachets made of dried lavender or other fragrant flowers. Essential oils and extracts from flowers and other plants have heady fragrances. You could put a drop or two of essential oil or extract on a cotton ball and place them in the bathroom. Some plants seem to deter insect pests. Basil, rosemary and tansy are all said to deter mosquitoes and ant. You can give them a try in your garden. Best wishes with your garden! |
