The Q&A Archives: Sweet potato growth

Question: I have a sweet potatoe growing in my window without dirt. It has leaves on it now can this be planted in the ground. And do I plant the whole potato underground with the leaves above ground.

Answer: You can plant it by digging a shallow trench and laying the potato in the trench, then placing soil over it. I have better luck leaving the top of the potato out of the ground and burying only about 2/3 of it. Either way it should root well and continue to grow for you as long as you keep it well watered.
