The Q&A Archives: Starting Tomato from Seed

Question: I am starting tomatoes from seeds and I am not sure when I to start them. The only information I have found is for really warmer zones which have warmer temperatures in the Spring. Because my planting and growing season is later and shorter, I am not sure when to start. Karla Holland Bangor, ME

Answer: Start your tomatoes 4-6 weeks before you plan on setting them out which would be around Memorial Day in Maine. This will insure that the plants will be just the right size for transplanting. Keep them protected at night with a cloche(cover) during the first few weeks especially if the weather stays cold and windy..
