when to trim and how far down thank you it was first planted this july 07

If you just planted your lilac, you won't want to do any pruning until next year. Lilacs produce flower buds during the summer months for the following year's display. So, you can prune after the flowers have faded next spring. Prune to even the shape out or reduce the size. Annual pruning will keep the shrub in shape.
