| Vicki, Gardenias love moist soil conditions but need good drainage so it doesn't stay soggy. They prefer a slightly acidic soil and respond well to fertilizers for acid loving plants. Work a few inches of compost or peat moss into the planting bed prior to planting. Provide them a location with plenty of morning sun but some afternoon shade if you can. Thanks for the question.
