The Q&A Archives: Tulip Companions

Question: I planted tulips last Fall which should come up in the spring. After they have bloomed, I would like to plant zucchini in the same area. Will the zucchini grow without harming the tulip bulbs? Margaret Book Murrysville, PA

Answer: After tulips finish blooming, their foliage gradually dies away. Many gardeners plant other flowers (or vegetables, in your case) to fill in the gap left by the tulips! They should grow fine, just be careful in Fall when you dig out your old squash plant that you don't dig up the tulip bulbs too..
