The Q&A Archives: Mulching Tomatoes with Pine Needles

Question: I need to mulch my tomatoes. I have a lot of pine needles around. Can I use them for mulch? I realize theyare acidic, and wonder if tomatoes like acid or not?

Answer: A mulch layer of pine needles will not significantly affect the pH of the soil in one season. Reminders: do not mulch until the soil heats up enough to encourage active growth in your tomatoes and do not allow a mulch to stand against the plant (a 2-inch buffer zone is nice).
