The Q&A Archives: Planting between stepping stones

Question: Any suggestions for a low growing plant/herb to place between stepping stones exposed to full sun and usually dry soil (but can be watered)? Needs to be winter hardy, and, of course, attractive. The stones are 1" thick so the plant shouldn't be more than 2-3" tall. Pretty "tall" order, huh?! If you suggest an herb, what specific cultivar? Many thanks.
