The Q&A Archives: Care of Royal Robe Solanum

Question: Daughter purchased 2 Royal RObe Solanum bushes for Fathers day and they are growning but some of the leaves are turning yellow. What is the reason? Also, what time of the year do you prune them back? These are spreading everywhere. Thank you for information?

Answer: These are approximately six foot tall (or more if left unpruned) semi-vining shrubs (Solanum rantonnetii 'Royal Robe'or Lycianthes r. 'Royal Robe') that can be grown as container plants in large pots. Usually they are staked and trained into a tree form or standard with a straight bare stem about three feet tall below the branches. Regular pinching and light trimming will help keep it in bounds. They are not winter hardy so must be brought indoors each fall if you want to keep them from year to year. The time to prune them back harder if you need to reshape or control the size is in fall when you bring them inside. Enjoy your Royal Robes!
