I have read that as the plant grow it starts to grow far apart. Can I just cut the tops off or what do I have to do to make them closer together?

This depends on what you mean by far apart. If the internodes are lengthening and the plant is stretching then it needs more direct sunlight. If it should be branching and growing denser, then a pinch would help with that. Keep in mind that most commercially sold, florist type kalanchoe plants are several cuttings grown close together in one pot.

Most of the modern varieties do not need much if any pinching. Here are detailed growing directions --geared for commercial growers -- but they explain very precisely how to grow and bloom this plant.
