The Q&A Archives: type of houseplant

Question: This plant has leaves that are 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. It has darkish green leaves with brown spots on them. The spots are in a line of four and are on both sides on the leaves. It looks like a philodendron and a butterfly plant but with leaves like the philodrendron. What type of plant is this?

Answer: It's almost impossible to identify a plant without actually seeing it. The features you mention could be almost anything, from Maranta (prayer plant, rabbit's tracks) to peperomia (a trailing plant). I'd need to see the leaf arrangement on the stem, the texture of the leaves and the growth habit to make a positive identification. A good book on houseplants might help you determine the identity of your houseplant.
