I would like to start growing plants from seed - I have a large area in my basement that could handle one of those 3 tier light stands - however, they are quite expensive - catalogs sell them for about $500 - any suggestions on how to make my own or where to find used ones?

I agree, they are expensive. If you're handy you can certainly make one yourself. Check the library for plans or even figure it out yourself, if you're up to it, from pictures in those expensive catalogues!

I have a pretty inexpensive set-up. I take a set of adjustable metal shelves--the kind you can get for a reasonable price. I set mine up on an old table. I then hang a fluorescent light from the top shelf, so it shines down on the second shelf. I hang a second light from the second shelf, shining down on the shelf below. I hang the lights using small chains and S-hooks, so I can adjust them up as the plants grow. It's not the most convenient or efficient, but the price was right!

The other possibility is to check the localpaper's classified section. You might even run an ad yourself. Do you know any Garden Clubbers? They might be a source of help!
