I want to make boxes for raising vegetables. I have lumber on hand but it is not pressure treated. What can I use for wood preservation? Or should I just purchase Sunwood? |
You can use the untreated lumber you have on hand, knowing that it will have to be replaced in 6-7 years. The life of Sunwood is about the same. If you want to purchase lumber, invest in cedar. Cedar has a natural preservative in it and lasts much longerthan other types of lumber. There are some plastic timbers available, as well. The concern about using chemical preservatives is that the chemicals can leach into the soil. If you use chemically treated timbers for your vegetable garden, try not to planttoo close to the timbers, and be sure to keep root crops like carrots away from the edges of the bed. |
