Is it true if you drive a nail into a trunk of a tree it will kill it?

Will a cotton wood tree that is 20 feet from a swimming pool, will the roots pose a potential problem for damage to the pool and or house/foundation etc.

Driving a nail into the trunk of a cottonwood tree is not likely to kill it. If you want to get rid of the tree, I'd recommend hiring an arborist to not only remove the tree but to kill the roots, as well. Otherwise, you'll have little cottonwood trees suckering up from the remaining roots and that can cause a real landscape nightmare.
