| Many gardeners prefer to raise their potatoes above ground because they're easy to harvest and it takes less room. You just need a way to contain the planting medium, and you need to add more planting medium as the plant grows. Some people use old tires, stacked three or four high. Others use a wire cage. Whatever you use, start with some regular garden soil and plant your potato. When it sprouts and grows several inches high, add some soil - or finished compost, or a layer of straw. The plant will produce tubers in the planting medium after rooting from the stem. As the plant grows, add more planting medium. Stop adding matter when the potato plant flowers. When the tops of the plant die down at the end of the season, you can harvest your crop. |
