Just planted a small Japanese maple and have watered daily. The leaves are drying out. What does the tree need in the way of water and fertilizer?

One deep soaking per week is all your Japanese maple will need. If you water too much, the roots can suffocate. It is likely to look sick until the roots become established. At that time it should perk up and begin to look healthy again. Water it deeply once a week and it will adjust in a few weeks.
