Banana plants thrive in bright shade (the leaves can burn in hot sunshine) and they love lots of moisture. If you're planting yours outdoors, amend the soil with lots of organic matter and try to situate it where it gets full shade or at least shade from hot afternoon sunshine. Water deeply and often, and feed with a liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Banana is hardy to about 32F; if it freezes down to ground level, cut it off at soil level in the spring and the roots will send up a new leafy stalk.

Best wishes with your banana plant!
