when is the best time to trim off low hanging branches? Is there a certain way they need to be trimmed so as not to destroy the tree?

Winter, when the tree is dormant, is the best time to do some serious pruning on a mulberry. If there's just a branch or two you want to remove, you can do it now. When you're pruning, it's important not to leave stubs; cut a branch back to where it emerges to remove it completely, or back to where you want new growth to begin.
