The Q&A Archives: gardenia bush

Question: What causes the buds on my gardenia bush to fall off before they open?

Answer: Ina,

This is usually due to some type of stress. Drought stress, soggy wet soil stress, excessive shade or damage from a chemical product can all stress the plants. If you can determine what is stressing them and fix it, and then try to keep the soil moisture more moderate they should recover in time and start blooming properly. Sometimes it takes a bush a season or two to settle in and hold the blooms better.
