How should I prune my crape myrtle?

Crape myrtles bloom on the current season's wood, which means they should be pruned in late winter. Shorten the branches by one-half or two-thirds of their length. Try to make your cuts above an outward-facing bud. Your efforts will be rewarded when your plant produces more blooming shoots this summer!
