The Q&A Archives: Kindergarteners Growing Sunflowers

Question: How long does it take for dwarf sunflowers to mature from seed to flower? I want to have my kdg. class plant them for Mother's Day? Do I have time?

Answer: I'm afraid you probably don't have enough time. I would estimate it takes 10 to 12 weeks to get a sunflower to blossom. You might be able to get a nasturtium to blossom, but it's cutting it close. You could, of course, have the children grow the sunflower plants and give those--the mothers will still get flowers--just not on Mother's Day!
