The Q&A Archives: fig tree maintainance

Question: i just planted my 1st fig tree. anything you can tell meabout maintaining it will be of great help. thankyou

Answer: According to your zip code you are gardening in USDA winter hardiness zone 6B which is on the cold side for figs. Hopefully it is planted in a very sheltered spot with a warm microclimate to help with surviving the winters and extend the growing season.

I think you will find the following publication gives you what you need to know in some detail. In the meantime, the most important thing is to not overfertilize it as that leads to increased susceptibility to winter damage. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly.

Good luck with your fig!
