I have approx.30 small holes where grass has pulled back and died. Some type of animal is digging it up but nothing is being buried beneath it. How can I prevent the unknown varmit from doing further damage to my lawn? Squirrel's nest in tree in back yard.

Based on your description I suspect there are lawn grubs and skunks are visiting at night to dig for them. You might check for grubs and if you find a large number, treat them using beneficial nematodes. Late summer is the time to apply those.
