The Q&A Archives: Planting Sugar Cane

Question: I have a stalk of sugar cane I want to plant in my garden. Can you tell me how and when to do this.

Answer: Sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) is tropical plant; it requires full sun and rich, moist soil. You have a few options. You could plant the sugar cane outdoors, then, come fall, take some cuttings to bring indoors to overwinter. Or, you could try planting it in a large pot, then sinking the pot into the garden. Come fall, you can pull the entire pot up and bring it indoors until next spring.
