The Q&A Archives: Fig tree not producing flowers/fruit

Question: My fig tree is 3 years old and has grown from 2 feet to 8 feet. Why hasn't it produced any fruit yet.

Answer: Christine,

I can't tell you why it hasn't fruited yet but some likely causes are stress from drought or nematodes on the roots (if it is in sandy soil especially). It could also be a lack of sunlight as fruitful figs need lots of sun; at least 6 hours and more is better. Hold off on fertilizing it unless it looks like it lacks good green color. Keep the soil moist but not too wet.
