| Some herbs that grow well in Sonora include: Lemon basil (Ocimum basilicum) This variety has been grown for 60 years in southeastern New Mexico. It is an Old World introduction and readily self-seeds. Plant in spring and summer. Anis (Tagetes lucida) "Mexican Mint Marigold" A perennial native to Mexico, traditionally used as a tea (reputed cold remedy). Wonderful aroma. Can be used as a substitute for tarragon. Attractive in desert landscape. Plant in spring or summer. Plants flower in late fall. Plants are day-length sensitive. Corrales Azafr (Carthamus tinctorius) Safflower from the village of Corrales, NM. Azafr translates as "saffron". This unrelated red/orange thistle-like flower was used as a saffron substitute in the Spanish Colonies. Epazote (Chenopodium ambrosioides) A commonly used herb in Mexico. Aromatic foliage has a distinct flavor used to season beans. Guarijio Conivari (Hyptis suaveolens) A cooling drink is made from the jelled, chia-like seed which has high-fiber mucilage. Mayo Indians use it for an eye remedy. Plant in summer. Hinojo (Anethum graveolens) This is from a Mayo garden in Piedras Verdes, Sonora, Mexico. Mild dill flavor. You can also grow basil, parsley, dill, rosemary and tarragon. Gardening is typically done from October through March, depending upon elevation. If you get frost, plant in March so you can harvest before June. If you do not get frost, plant in October and then again in March, avoiding gardening or harvesting during the hottest months of the year. Best wishes with your herb garden! |
