The Q&A Archives: snails

Question: How can you get rid of snails on the leaves of the acorn squash and the stems of the melon and cantelope plants

Answer: If you can find the snails on the plants, pick them off by hand aqnd drop them into soapy water. Early evening is the best time to do this. Sprinkling diatomaceouos earth on the soil surface between the plants will also help -- but will not remove them from the plants. Snails can also be controlled using the newer formulations of bait based on iron phosphate. Also avoid watering in the evening and avoid wetting the foliage when you water as this attracts them.
