Joseph,

Roses like full sun and moist but well drained soil. Maintain soil moisture and fertilize every 6 weeks with a turf type fertilizer at a rate of one cup per 50 square feet. There is nothing that will keep insect from attacking your plants but if they do attack there are many products to get rid of them. The key is to spray early in the infestation before they have time to build up large numbers and do significant damage. Aphids and mites are best controlled with insecticidal soap sprays directed upward to contact the lower leaf surfaces. Caterpillars are controlled by products with Bacillus thuringiensis or B.t. for short applied to the foliage they are feeding on.
