We live on the Gulf Coast in west central Florida and would like to plant wild flowers on our property. Do you have advise and seeds? |
Burpee has wild flower seed on page 53 of Burpee's 1998 catalog. Wildseed Farms (ph# 800-848-0078) has a "Southeastern Wildflower Mix" that would be suitable for your region. They should also have information about growing wildflowers in yourclimate. Preparing the site properly is the first and most important step in planting a wildflower meadow. Spread a couple inches of compost or well rotted cow manure over your plot and till shallowly. Rake the soil with a steel, short-toothed rake in one direction. After sowing seed lightly rake plot in the oposite direction. This will cover the seeds to the right depth. Water well, and be prepared to water the area during dry spells while the plants are getting established. |
